Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Use this sequence:
- Check whether the Gmail address is still recognized as a Microsoft account by going to the Microsoft account sign-in page and entering that address.
- If a password prompt appears, the address is a Microsoft account.
- If the message says "We couldn't find an account with that username" or "That Microsoft account doesn't exist", first verify the spelling carefully, including the full address.
- If the address is correct, try password recovery instead of creating a new account:
- Select Forgot password?
- If another alias or phone number was ever added to the account, use that instead if the Gmail address is not recognized.
- Follow the security code steps and set a new password if verification succeeds.
- If recovery still says the account does not exist, use the Sign-in Helper tool. Microsoft specifically recommends it for this exact error.
- If the username lookup sends a code to the Gmail address and that mailbox can still receive mail, complete that verification. That indicates the address is associated with an account.
- If the account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted and can no longer be reopened.
- If the password reset flow shows unfamiliar verification options and two-step verification was not turned on, use the Sign-in Helper tool.
- If the account recovery form is needed:
- Complete it from a device and location commonly used for that account if possible.
- Provide as much accurate history as possible, such as older passwords.
- Recovery results are sent to the working email address entered at the start of the form, usually within 24 hours.
- The form can be retried up to two times per day if verification fails.
- If the sign-in name was changed or one alias was blocked for sign-in, use Forgot your username? to identify which aliases belong to the account, then sign in with an alias that is allowed.
Important limits:
- A new Microsoft account cannot be created with an address that is already associated with an existing Microsoft account.
- Microsoft support agents cannot send password reset links or directly change account details.
- Personal Microsoft accounts and work or school accounts cannot be merged.
