Office 2021 and Microsoft 365 Current Channel are not the same update track.
Version 2608 Build 16.0.20326.20072 is an Office 2021 build. The Version 2609 Build 20430.20146 page referenced is for Current Channel, which applies to Microsoft 365 Apps subscription installations, not perpetual Office 2021.
For retail Office 2021, the update history shows these newer builds:
- Version 2608 (Build 20326.20158)
- Version 2609 (Build 20430.20092)
- Version 2609 (Build 20430.20118)
- Version 2609 (Build 20430.20146)
So Office 2021 can be newer than 16.0.20326.20072, but whether it updates depends on what is actually installed:
- If the installation is truly Office 2021 retail, it should follow the Office 2021 update history.
- If the installation is tied to a Microsoft 365 subscription through work or school, the latest version is available as long as Office is kept up to date, but admins can delay feature updates.
Recommended checks:
- In an Office app, open File > Account.
- Confirm the product name shown there:
- Office 2021 means a perpetual license.
- Microsoft 365 means a subscription install.
- In the same Account page, use Update Options > Update Now.
- If it still says up to date, compare the installed product type with the correct update history page:
- Office 2021 → Office 2021 update history
- Microsoft 365 subscription → Current Channel or the channel assigned to that installation
If the product is actually Microsoft 365 but still remains on an older build, the installation may not have received the latest update yet, or the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin may be restricting Office updates until testing is complete.
If the product is Office 2021, it does not “upgrade” to Microsoft 365 Current Channel just because that page shows a newer build stream. Moving between perpetual Office and Microsoft 365 is a product/license change, not a normal update.
