Check that the paid subscription appears under the same Microsoft account used by Word, then use the matching path below depending on whether Word reaches its account screen or fails during startup.
1. Verify the subscription and account
- Open the Services & subscriptions page.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase or renew Microsoft 365.
- Confirm that the product is listed as Active, and note its exact name.
- If it is not listed, try any other Microsoft account that might have been used for the purchase.
- If the plan is Microsoft 365 Basic, the accepted Q&A guidance indicates that it does not include the desktop Word application; Microsoft 365 Personal and Family do.^1^
Microsoft documents that Word must be signed in with the account associated with the Office product; using another account can produce “We couldn't find any Office products.”^2^
2. If Word opens but says you are locked out or unlicensed
- In Word, select File → Account.
- Sign out of every account shown.
- Close Word and every other Office application.
- Reopen Word and sign in with the account showing the active subscription.
- If Reactivate appears, select it.
- If activation still fails, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from Microsoft’s activation page. Select the troubleshooter button, allow the page to open Get Help, and complete the prompts.
The troubleshooter must run on the affected PC and requires Windows 10 or later.^2^
If multiple Office installations appear: open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, search for Office, and uninstall only the old or unused duplicate. Restart Windows and test Word again. Multiple installations can cause activation conflicts.^2^
3. If Word crashes or never opens
Test Word in Office Safe Mode:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
winword /safe
- Select OK.
If Word opens in Safe Mode, go to File → Options → Add-ins. At the bottom, select COM Add-ins → Go, disable one add-in, and restart Word normally. Repeat until the problematic add-in is identified.^3^
If Word does not open in Safe Mode, repair Office:
- Windows 11: Right-click Start → Installed apps → Microsoft 365/Office → … → Modify → Online Repair → Repair.
- Windows 10: Right-click Start → Apps and Features → Microsoft 365/Office → Modify → Online Repair → Repair.
Online Repair is more comprehensive than Quick Repair and repairs the whole Office suite.^4^
If it remains locked after these steps
If the active subscription is visible but activation still fails after the activation troubleshooter and Online Repair, contact Microsoft Support. Only Microsoft Support can inspect or correct an account-side purchase, entitlement, or activation state.
Have these details ready:
- Purchase receipt or order number
- Microsoft account email used for the purchase
- Exact subscription name
- Exact error message or code
Do not post the receipt, order number, or account details publicly.
