Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
If Office apps are opening in read-only mode and Word is asking to activate, the most common cause is that the app is signed in with the wrong account or the license is not being recognized.
Try this in order:
- Confirm which account has the Microsoft 365 license
- Sign in at
https://account.microsoft.com/services. - If the Microsoft 365 subscription appears there, that is the correct account to use in Word, Excel, and other Office apps.
- If no Office license appears, try any other Microsoft account that may have been used to purchase or redeem Microsoft 365.
- Sign in at
- Sign out and sign back in inside Office
- Open Word.
- Go to Account.
- Sign out of the current account.
- Sign back in with the account confirmed in step 1.
- If needed, choose Sign in with another account.
- Refresh the license in Office
- In Word, go to Account > Product Information.
- Select Update License.
- If this is a work or school account
- The license may not be set up yet by the organization administrator.
- Use the My Account portal for work or school accounts, or contact the IT admin.
- If password sign-in is failing for a work or school account, use the work or school password reset page.
- If the sign-in itself is failing
- Use the Microsoft Sign-in Helper tool to identify account problems.
- If the password is forgotten, reset it.
- If the username is not recognized, use the Sign-in Helper tool.
- Important account note
- Microsoft 365 apps do not support being signed in with multiple user accounts from the same Microsoft 365 organization or tenant at the same time. Sign out from one user account before signing in with another.
If the subscription is visible on the services page and Office still stays read-only after sign out → sign in → Update License, the issue is likely with local Office activation state on that device.
