How can I recover my stolen Microsoft account?

My Microsoft account was compromised a few months ago, and I believe the attacker changed the associated email address and security settings. Now, when I try to recover it, Microsoft says the email address isn't recognized.

I still have access to the original email address I used to create the account and purchase Minecraft, and I can provide information proving my ownership, and that the change wasn't done by me.

Is there any way to recover my account in this situation?

If this was an Xbox account, you can try the Xbox Account Recovery Form instead of the Microsoft Account Recovery form

Microsoft Account Security is an automated process. Microsoft Support Agents can not unlock an account, reset your password, or change any Security Settings no matter what documentation you can present.

Yes. The supported recovery path is:

Try the Sign-in Helper first. If the account was changed and the original sign-in email is no longer recognized, use the Sign-in Helper tool. It can provide self-help steps or offer the chance to talk to an agent.
Complete the Microsoft account recovery form. Use a working email address that can receive updates about the request. Include as much information as possible about the account and services used with it. For Outlook/Hotmail accounts, exact email subject lines and contact details can help. For Skype or Xbox-related use, those details can also be requested.
If the original email is reported as not recognized, check carefully for sign-in variations. Verify the email domain and spelling, and try any other alias or phone number that may have been on the account.
If the account was compromised, secure the device before changing passwords. Run a full antivirus scan first, then change or reset the password if sign-in becomes possible.
If recovery succeeds, review account settings immediately. Check connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies, because these settings may have been changed after the compromise.
If security info was replaced, a 30-day wait can apply. If the message says the security info change is still pending, the previous security info was removed and replaced, and the changes take effect after 30 days.
If the form fails, keep retrying within the allowed limit or contact support. Recovery form results are sent to the working email within 24 hours. If verification fails, the form can be retried up to two times per day.
