Is CoPilot still having a problem with Memory?

Copilot states that it can only remember items in the current thread, but if you have been working in the same thread on the same day and leave to go to another thread, its memory is wiped clean. despite what was discussed is in that chat thread, he cannot remember it? This does not make the use of Copilot time or cost-efficient because you could be working for a considerable amount of time on an issue and he could forget it, and you will have to start all over again. Is this so, as this is a serious issue that should be addressed? Please advise.

    Hello DebraJBrown-1615,

I’m sorry you’ve had to repeat your work. If you return to the same conversation, that’s different from asking Copilot to remember details across separate chats.

When you reopen the original chat, are your earlier messages still visible, but Copilot responds as though they were never discussed? Also, are you using the Copilot app on Windows or Copilot in a browser? That would help narrow down what is happening without assuming the Memory setting is the cause.

Yes. The reported behavior can still occur, and the available guidance does not show a confirmed public fix for cases where Copilot fails to retain context even within the same chat thread.

    Supported facts:

    1. Copilot memory and personalization are separate features from normal chat continuity.
      • Memory/personalization can be on by default when available.
      • If turned off, Copilot forgets memories from conversations and future responses are no longer personalized.
    2. For Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, saved memories are explicit or inferred details that Copilot can use later.
      • Copilot can save information when asked.
      • Temporary chat does not use or update memory, and it does not appear in chat history.
    3. There are documented user reports where Copilot did not retain information as expected.
      • One accepted Microsoft Q&A answer states there was no publicly documented incident confirming a recent-context problem, but recommends reporting it through Send feedback > Report a problem.
      • For work or school accounts, the Microsoft 365 administrator should check Health > Service health and can open a support request if the issue is ongoing.
    4. For consumer Copilot memory, rollout has been staged for eligible accounts and regions.
      • Accepted Microsoft Q&A answers indicate memory availability has been rolling out gradually, so some accounts or regions may not yet have full functionality even if settings appear enabled.

    Practical guidance:

    1. Check whether Personalization and memory is enabled.
      • On copilot.com, Copilot for Windows, and Copilot for macOS: select the profile icon, select the profile name, then Memory > Personalization and memory.
      • In Edge Sidebar: ... > Settings > Memory > Personalization and memory.
    2. Confirm the chat is not a temporary chat.
      • Temporary chats do not access or store personalized information and cannot be referenced later.
    3. If memory is enabled but Copilot still loses context, treat it as a product issue rather than expected behavior.
      • Use Send feedback > Report a problem when it happens.
      • Include the approximate time, platform, and whether it happens across multiple devices.
    4. If using a work or school account, have the Microsoft 365 admin check Health > Service health and open a service request if needed.

So the short answer is: this is a real issue reported by users, it is not documented as normal intended behavior, and if it happens in a non-temporary chat with memory enabled, it should be reported for investigation.
