Child account stuck in an orphaned Microsoft Family group / Cannot leave

2026-10-16T12:27:18.1233333+00:00

Hello,

My child's account accidentally joined a phantom/other family group where the organizer is no longer accessible. Because of this, the account is stuck and cannot leave the current family group to join back into our primary group (showing an error when trying to leave).

Here are the details:

  • Child account email: ******@gmail.com
  • Parent account email: ******@gmail.com

Error Trace ID: ibqpuWJQYU2i6VRE.33.88

Could someone guide how to force-remove this child account from the current inaccessible family group? Thank you!

A child account cannot force-leave a Microsoft family group; the adult who originally granted consent must recover their account, remove consent, and then remove the child from the group.^1^

    Required removal sequence

Since the child’s Leave family group action already fails, do not keep retrying it. Identify the adult Microsoft account that originally granted parental consent—this might be an old address, alias, or account different from the parent account currently in use.

    1. Recover access to that adult/organizer Microsoft account. Microsoft specifically directs the adult or appropriate guardian to attempt account recovery when the consenting account is inaccessible.^2^
    2. Sign in to the Microsoft Family Safety group using the recovered adult account.
    3. Open the child’s entry and select Remove consent for this child’s account.
    4. Return to the family-group page.
    5. Select Remove from family group, and then confirm Remove.^1^
    6. After removal, sign in with the intended parent/organizer account and invite the child to the primary family group again.

Only the adult who originally granted consent can remove that consent. Being an organizer in another family group does not provide authority over consent granted by a different adult.^2^

Removing the child may also remove access to Family Safety features and shared products or digital purchases provided through the old family group.^3^

If the original adult account cannot be recovered

    Escalate through Microsoft Support:

    1. Open Contact Microsoft Support from the support link on the Family Safety troubleshooting page.
    2. Enter a description such as Child account cannot be removed from inaccessible Microsoft family group.
    3. Select Get Help, followed by Contact Support when offered.^4^
    4. Provide:
      • The child account address privately in the support case.
      • The inaccessible organizer/consenting account, if known.
      • The trace ID: ibqpuWJQYU2i6VRE.33.88.
      • The exact error message and approximate date/time of the failed removal.
      • A screenshot with unrelated personal information hidden.
      • Confirmation that the child cannot leave and the original consenting adult cannot access the account.

Support agents cannot send password-reset links or directly access and alter account details, so escalation does not guarantee a forced removal; they can route the account-specific issue and determine the available recovery or Family Safety resolution.^4^

Do not post either account’s full email address, passwords, verification codes, or recovery information in this public Q&A thread.
