I received Microsoft's notification regarding the upcoming changes to Microsoft 365 Family storage.

My current Microsoft 365 Family subscription expires on October 1, 2027, and all six family members currently have 1 TB of OneDrive storage each.

If I redeem additional 12-month Microsoft 365 Family retail product keys before May 2, 2027, extending my subscription to October 2029 or 2030, will the existing 1 TB per person storage remain available until the new expiration date?

Or will redeeming these keys trigger the change to 2 TB shared storage immediately?

Please confirm specifically how prepaid retail key extensions are treated under the new storage policy.

According to Microsoft's recently updated documentation, existing Microsoft 365 Family subscribers will transition from 1 TB per person to 2 TB of shared storage at their first subscription renewal on or after May 2, 2027, unless an eligible plan change triggers the transition earlier. You can review the official announcement here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/onedrive/changes-to-microsoft-365-storage

Microsoft also confirms that redeeming additional retail product keys for the same Microsoft 365 subscription extends its duration, up to a maximum of five years. However, the current documentation does not explicitly clarify whether redeeming prepaid keys before May 2, 2027, will preserve the existing 1 TB per-person allocation until an extended expiration date in 2029 or 2030, or whether the new storage model will be applied earlier. Therefore, I cannot guarantee either outcome. Renewal documentation is available here:

    Hi @Phan Dang Trieu

Good question to ask before buying the keys. Here's what Microsoft's "Changes to Microsoft 365 storage" page says, and where it stops.

    What the page confirms:

    • For existing Family subscribers, nothing changes before May 2, 2027.
    • The change "generally takes effect after the first subscription renewal on or after May 2, 2027", and you get an email before that renewal.
    • Upgrading moves you to shared storage straight away. A downgrade alone doesn't.

What it doesn't cover is prepaid retail keys or stacked extensions. So I can't confirm from official docs that redeeming keys now would lock in 1 TB per person until 2029 or 2030.

Reading it as written, I'd expect your current term to keep 1 TB per person until October 1, 2027. The next term (the one paid for by the redeemed key) would be the first renewal after May 2, 2027, so that's likely when shared storage would apply. But that's my reading, not a Microsoft statement.

    Before you buy anything:

    1. Contact Microsoft support from account.microsoft.com > Help (sign in with the account that owns the subscription), and ask exactly this question.
    2. Ask them to confirm in writing how a redeemed retail key is treated: as a renewal at the current term's end, or as an extension of the current term.
    3. Keep an eye out for the pre-renewal email. It should spell out what your plan moves to and when.

Do you already have the keys, or are you deciding whether to buy them?

If this answered your question, please consider accepting it as the answer. If support gives you a different answer, let me know and I'll be happy to keep helping.
