A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For a third-party account such as Facebook, Microsoft Authenticator can only restore the verification code entry if a valid backup exists and is restored on the same device type. iPhone backups can only be restored to iPhone. If the backup was not available or failed, the previous Authenticator codes cannot be recovered from Microsoft Authenticator.
What is still possible:
- On the new iPhone, verify that iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup are enabled.
- Reinstall Microsoft Authenticator if needed.
- In Authenticator, use the restore flow and sign in with the same recovery account used on the old iPhone.
- If no backup is found or restore does not bring back the Facebook entry, the Authenticator app cannot reconstruct that old Facebook TOTP secret.
Important limitation:
- Third-party accounts such as Facebook restore only when the saved one-time password entry exists in the backup.
- Without that backup, the codes are not recoverable through Microsoft.
Practical next step:
- The Facebook account must be recovered through Facebook’s own account recovery or MFA reset process, then a new authenticator setup must be created for that account.
If the issue is specifically with restoring Authenticator on iPhone:
- If access to iCloud is the problem, contact Apple Support.
- If restore fails for any other reason, the accounts must be added again individually.
If Authenticator itself is still malfunctioning after restore attempts:
- Open Authenticator.
- Go to the app’s top-level menu.
- Select Send feedback to send log files for diagnostics.
- Then contact Support or use the Microsoft Authenticator app forum.
