A tool for managing user identities, credentials, and access across on-premises and cloud environments
If the sign-in email was changed by the attacker, support cannot manually switch it back or change account details on the account’s behalf. The supported recovery path is:
- Use the Microsoft hacked-account recovery process and the sign-in helper tool.
- Start with the hacked account recovery flow.
- Enter the original email address that was previously used on the account.
- Follow the recovery options shown.
- The tool may offer self-help steps or the chance to talk to an agent.
- If access is regained, immediately secure the account.
- Change or reset the password.
- Check account settings such as connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies.
- Review recent activity at https://account.live.com/activity.
- Add updated security info such as an alternate email address and mobile phone number.
- Before changing the password, run a full malware scan on the PC.
- Open Virus and threat protection.
- Select Scan options > Full scan > Scan now.
- This helps prevent the attacker from stealing the new password again.
- If the account is blocked or locked, use the account unblock or sign-in helper flow.
- A temporarily blocked Outlook.com account is unblocked by resetting the password.
- If the Microsoft account is locked, sign in at
https://account.microsoft.comand follow the unlock steps.
- If the recovery flow does not work, use the support path offered there.
- The hacked-account tool can guide to the right self-help or offer the chance to talk to an agent.
- Support agents still cannot send password reset links or directly change account details for the account.
If two-step verification was enabled and recovery options were changed by the attacker, the recovery form may not be available, and direct restoration by support is not provided.
