Fixing an authenticator loop and other login issues.

I am at my wits' end. I am trying to log into my onmicrosoft.com account, but every time I do, it asks for an Authenticator token that I never set up, nor can I receive. When I got to the Admin Center to try and submit a support request, it requires logging in - which I cannot do. Calling Microsoft Support doesn't help, as when the AI doesn't immediately hang up on me, it sends me a form that says I'm not an owner of the account, despite the fact that, when my employee logs in and looks at the Groups page, it says that I'm an owner.

I can't log in to submit a support request, I can't log in via the phone service (when it doesn't just hang up on me), and now I'm being told two separate things by the same service. I couldn't even log into my own account to make this post, I had to ask one of my employees to do it for me. This is absurd.

Please note that forum moderators do not have access to user account settings and cannot assist with logging in, resetting passwords, or changing access rights. While we do not have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend-related issues, but we’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of our responsibilities.

    Hello @Steven Schneider
I’m sorry you’ve had to go through so much difficulty trying to regain access to your account.

I would like to clarify that being listed as an Owner on the Groups page does not necessarily mean that your account is an administrator of the Microsoft 365 tenant. Group ownership and administrator roles are separate.

Since one of your employees can still sign in, please check whether that employee, your IT team, or another user in your organization has an administrator role and can access the Microsoft 365 admin center.

If another administrator is available, please ask them to reset your MFA or require you to register your authentication methods again. This is usually the quickest way to regain access.

For reference: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID | …
Once this is done, you should be prompted to set up Microsoft Authenticator or another permitted authentication method again.

If no other administrator exists and you are the only administrator of the tenant, Microsoft Support will need to assist with the account recovery because there would be no other administrator available internally to reset your MFA.
When contacting Microsoft, be prepared to verify ownership of the subscription. You may be asked for information such as:

    Organization name

    Billing or payment information

    Registered phone number

    Alternate email address

Once your identity is verified, the privacy team will be able to reset your MFA settings. You can then reset your account in the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new device or choose a different authentication method to sign in.

    Tips for navigating the IVR:

In some countries, an automated voice system is used. Example of a dialogue:

    • IVR: What problem is bothering you?

Client: Lost access to the only admin account

IVR: What product do you use?

    Customer: Office 365 for business

    IVR: School or Business Account?

    Client: Companies

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    Client: Yes

IVR: Is there another administrator in your organization?

Client: No. I am the only admin in my tenant

IVR: Do you need to create a support ticket?

Client: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.

I also recommend calling during business hours. In my experience, it can be difficult to get through to the correct support queue, and automated systems don't always work as expected. If you can't get through on your first try, I suggest trying again later or at a different time.
I hope this helps point you in the right direction. If you have any updates or additional questions, feel free to reply back and I'll do my best to assist further.

    Best regards,
