The Print to file behavior can come from two different places, and the fix depends on which one is happening:
- A virtual printer is selected If the selected printer is Microsoft Print to PDF or another virtual printer, printing will open a save dialog instead of sending output to a physical printer. Select the actual local/network printer in the Print dialog.
- The printer port is set to Print to File
If a physical printer keeps prompting to save, check the printer port:
- Open Control Panel.
- Open Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the printer and select Printer Properties.
- Open the Ports tab.
- If the port is set to Print to File, change it to the correct printer port, such as LPT1 for a USB-connected printer or WSD for a wireless printer.
- Save the change and test printing again.
- If the printer still prompts to save Remove the printer from Windows, restart the PC, and then reinstall the latest printer driver/software from the printer manufacturer.
- If the goal is to remove Microsoft Print to PDF from a Windows image
Windows includes Microsoft Print to PDF by default. During Windows installation, it can be removed by setting
RemoveMPDWto1in the answer file. Important: after the files are removed, the Microsoft Print to PDF print queue cannot be reinstalled.
