Dear Microsoft team,
We are paying Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers and have read your announcement about the move to "shared storage." We are deeply disappointed in Microsoft, and we want to say so plainly.
Today, every member of our subscription has 1 TB of personal cloud storage, which adds up to as much as 6 TB across six members. After the change, all members will share a combined 2 TB. That leaves each of us with an average of roughly 333 GB instead of 1 TB. This is a cut of two thirds, and on your top-tier consumer plan, no less.
What frustrates us most is how this is being presented. You describe the change as "more flexibility" and as a benefit for families. When your own support page raises the obvious question of whether this is a reduction in storage, it sidesteps it instead of answering with a clear yes. We feel misled. Presenting a cut in service as an improvement undermines the trust we have placed in Microsoft until now.
We would also point out that under German consumer law (Section 327r of the German Civil Code, BGB), a change to a digital product that impairs its use more than insignificantly triggers specific consumer rights. In our view, a reduction from up to 6 TB to 2 TB is anything but insignificant.
We therefore ask you to:
- keep the current allocation of 1 TB per member for existing subscriptions on a permanent basis, or
- reduce the subscription price to reflect the reduced service,
- and confirm to us in writing exactly what will apply to our subscription from the first renewal after May 2, 2027, including the amount and duration of any bonus storage.
If the change goes ahead as announced, we will cancel our subscription before the next renewal and move to another provider.
We look forward to your written response.
Kind regards,
Peter Hegemann
