Is it possible to remove an individual OneDrive account from a Windows PC / account?
Is there any known procedure to remove a OneDrive account, from a Windows PC / account? I.e. that guarantees the OneDrive account can no longer be accessed, from that Windows account?
I already found the "Unlink this PC" link, inside OneDrive settings. When I re-open OneDrive, it then shows a sign-in screen. However, appearances are deceptive.
"Unlink this PC" did not remove my credentials.
Details
When I re-enter my Microsoft account email, it signs back in again - without asking for any authentication (password, Windows Hello, verification code etc). I can create + delete files etc, and it affects my files on onedrive.live.com.
I have poked various things. None of them seems to work!
- I have now removed my Microsoft account in the Windows Settings app, in Accounts > Your accounts. This did not change the result.
- I tried rebooting after "Unlink this PC". Same result.
- I tried uninstalling the OneDrive app, re-downloading it, signing out of my Windows account (and then back in). Same result.
I also explored the official support page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/
- The home page links directly to Turn off, disable, or uninstall OneDrive. This only points towards "Unlink this PC". It does not suggest any other solutions, although the left hand side shows a "Troubleshooting" list (see below). There is a hidden marker, which says this page was only written for "SharePoint Server 2019".
- The same steps to "Unlink this PC" can be found if you search for [How to cancel or stop sync in OneDrive][cancel-or-stop-sync]. This article explicitly says the steps will work for both work/school accounts, and Microsoft accounts (which means [personal accounts][difference-accounts]).
- The home page has a "Troubleshoot" link, which in turn links to Unlink and re-link OneDrive. This claims that you after you "Unlink this PC", you can "Clear sign in credentials" (for all OneDrive accounts you have added?), using the following incantation:
This did not change the result. A hidden marker says the page only applies to "OneDrive for Business".- Press the Windows key + R to open a "Run" dialog.
- Enter the path %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings and select OK.
- Delete the PreSignInSettingsConfig.json file.
- The same troubleshooting list includes Reset OneDrive. I tried
wsreset.exeandC:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset. These commands ran as expected, according to the support page. They did not change the result. (The support page did not definitively say they would - it just had some interesting words like "reset" and "disconnects all your sync connections"). A hidden marker says this page only applies to "OneDrive for Business".
Environment
- Windows 11 Pro, 25H2.
- Installed on 2026-09-06.
- This is my personal computer. I am the sole administrator. I have never joined it to a domain, or added a "work/school" account.
- The OneDrive account is a Microsoft account - this means a personal account, with an @outlook.com address.
