OneDrive restore hasn't worked in the last few weeks

I have been able to use the OneDrive restore in the past, but as of the last few weeks regardless of which online tips I have attempted, I always get the same response,

We couldn't start your restore. Please go back to the restore and try again.

Graph Error: Only 1 work item is allowed per document library.

Any help would be appreciated Thank you

    Hi, aris d

I understand why this is frustrating after several weeks. Here are some suggestions you can try:

If you use Windows and had File History enabled before the problem, open File Explorer, right-click the folder that originally contained your files, and select Restore previous versions. Choose a backup from before the files were lost or damaged. Use Open in File History to check its contents, then Restore to... to save recovered files somewhere else without overwriting your current files. This requires an existing backup that included those files.

If this is a work or school account, ask your administrator whether your OneDrive was already protected by Microsoft 365 Backup. That provides a separate recovery option, including restoring selected files into a new folder. It only helps if suitable backup restore points already exist.

Because the “Only 1 work item is allowed per document library” error has persisted for weeks, contact Microsoft Support to have the existing OneDrive restore operation investigated or cleared; no public self-service control is documented for cancelling that work item.^1^

Contact support for the stuck restore

    For OneDrive for home/personal:

    1. Open Microsoft’s Restore OneDrive support page.
    2. Expand Need more help?, if necessary.
    3. Under Personal accounts, select Contact Microsoft Support.
    4. Enter the exact error:

We couldn't start your restore. Graph Error: Only 1 work item is allowed per document library.

    5. State that it occurs on OneDrive for home, has continued for several weeks, and prevents every new full-OneDrive restore.
    6. Ask support to check for a stale or active restore work item on the OneDrive document library.

Microsoft directs personal-account users to Contact Microsoft Support for technical help; work or school users must instead contact their organization’s IT administrator.^2^

Resetting or reinstalling the Windows OneDrive sync client is unlikely to resolve this specific error because Restore your OneDrive runs on the OneDrive website against the entire cloud library, rather than through the local sync application.^2^

Recover urgent files without a full restore

While support investigates, use the narrower recovery method matching what happened:

    • Deleted files or folders: On the OneDrive website, select Recycle bin, select the items, and then choose Restore. For personal accounts, deleted items are normally recoverable there for up to 30 days. Items permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin cannot be recovered through OneDrive restore.^3^
    • Overwritten or corrupted files: Right-click an affected file on the OneDrive website or in Windows File Explorer, select Version history, open the … menu beside the required version, and select Restore.^4^
    • Many files affected: Preserve the support request as the main path. Full OneDrive restore is a Microsoft 365 subscriber feature that rolls the entire OneDrive back to a selected point within the last 30 days.^2^

Avoid repeatedly submitting new full-library restores while the error remains; the message indicates that another work item is already registered for that library, and the matching reported case identifies waiting or Microsoft-side escalation when it does not clear.^1^
