For Microsoft 365, a PC does not need to be manually marked as “current” in the account before it can be used. The usual process is to sign in on that device and install or activate Microsoft 365 there.
- Sign in at microsoft365.com with the account associated with the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- If Microsoft 365 is not installed on the desktop, install or reinstall it from there.
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on the desktop and sign in with the same account to activate Office.
- If the desktop still does not appear as expected, check which account the apps are licensed to:
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Select File > Account.
- Under Product Information, confirm the account shown there.
For Microsoft 365 subscriptions, Office can be installed and signed in on multiple devices, and devices may be signed out automatically to stay within the sign-in limit. If a device has been reset, Microsoft 365 may need to be fully reinstalled and then signed in again.
If the goal is to make the desktop files and Desktop folder current across both the desktop and laptop, OneDrive Desktop backup may also need to be enabled on the desktop and laptop so the same Desktop folder syncs on both devices.
