How to add a new PC (laptop) to my Microsoft 365 license?

I just bought a new Dell laptop from Best Buy. They told me to contact Microsoft to 'un-register' my old Dell laptop (it is too old to run current Microsoft 365 products) and to register my new laptop to use current Microsoft 365 products. My registration and payment for Microsoft 365 is current.

Who can help me?

Hello

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, you don't need to unregister and register devices, just go ahead and install.

Please go to https://www.office.com

Sign into the Microsoft account you used for the subscription. Click on Apps on the left.

Then on the upper right, click on "Install apps". This will now download the installer file. Once downloaded, click on the file to install. It will install the Desktop version of the apps for you then.

No unregistering of the old laptop is required. A Microsoft 365 subscription for home can be installed on multiple devices; simply install and sign in on the new Dell laptop with the same Microsoft account that is already associated with the subscription.

    Use these steps:

    1. On the new Dell laptop, go to microsoft365.com.
    2. Select Sign in and sign in with the same Microsoft account used to buy or activate the Microsoft 365 subscription.
    3. After signing in, look for the option to Install apps and download the installer.
    4. Run the downloaded installer and complete setup. When an app (like Word) starts, if prompted, sign in with the same Microsoft account to activate.

If the subscription is already active and in good standing, this will associate the new laptop automatically; there is no separate “registration” step. If the apps are managed by an organization (work or school account) and no install option appears, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator as they may control installations.

If Microsoft 365 came pre‑installed as a trial on the new laptop and shows a Let’s get started screen (try, buy, or activate), sign in with the Microsoft account that has the paid subscription, or choose to buy/activate if a new subscription or product key is being used.

For additional guidance on installing or reinstalling on a new device, follow the steps in the installation and activation articles referenced below.
