A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If the old phone was wiped and there was no Microsoft Authenticator backup available, the Instagram one-time password codes generally cannot be recovered from Microsoft Authenticator.
For third-party accounts such as Instagram, the verification code entry is restored only when a backup was created before the phone change. If no backup exists, the practical recovery path is through the third-party service’s account recovery options and then setting up Authenticator again afterward.
If the account was backed up before the old phone was erased, check the following on the new phone:
- Sign in with the same recovery account used for the backup.
- If using iPhone, make sure iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup are enabled, and that Authenticator is turned on in Saved to iCloud.
- On iPhone, if the backup still does not appear, uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Authenticator, then check again.
- If using Android, Authenticator backup requires Cloud Backup to have been turned on in the app and saved to a Microsoft personal account.
If no backup appears after that, the codes are not recoverable from Authenticator. The remaining option is to use Instagram recovery methods such as backup codes, another sign-in method, or the service’s account recovery flow.
