Recently my Xbox app logged me out and has not allowed me to sign back in, both Xbox and Microsoft store will open a sign in screen then shortly after selecting an email to sign in with a smaller grey window will open then close. I have signed in with a local account and have not been able to "sign in with a Microsoft account instead". I am not very knowledgeable with pc's, so help is appreciated.

    Hi Trevor N,

Since this happens with both the Microsoft Store and Xbox app, and you also cannot switch from the local account to a Microsoft account, the issue may involve the Windows sign-in components rather than a single app.

One additional step you can try is repairing Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, which Windows applications can use to display web-based content:

    1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    2. Find Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
    3. Select Modify > Repair.
    4. Restart the PC and try signing in again.

If Modify/Repair isn't available, please let us know your Windows 11 version and OS build from Settings > System > About, and we can narrow down the next step safely.

I hope this helps get the sign-in window working normally again.

Run the Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool first, because the same small sign-in window immediately closing in Xbox and Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts was resolved with that tool in the matching Windows 11 case.^1^

    1. Repair Gaming Services

    1. Download Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC: https://aka.ms/GamingRepairTool
    2. Open the downloaded file.
    3. If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
    4. Let the repair finish, then restart the PC.
    5. Open Microsoft Store first and try signing in.
    6. If successful, open the Xbox app and sign in with the same Microsoft account.

The tool is supplied through a Microsoft link and is also referenced by Xbox Support.^1^

    2. Reset the Microsoft Store cache

If the grey window still closes:

    1. Close Microsoft Store and Xbox.
    2. Press Windows key + R.
    3. Type:
         wsreset.exe

    4. Select OK.
    5. A blank black window should appear briefly and close automatically; Microsoft Store should then open.^2^
    6. Try signing into Store, and then Xbox.

    3. Repair or reset both apps

    For Microsoft Store, then Xbox:

    1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    2. Find the app and select the three dots > Advanced options.
    3. Select Repair and test sign-in.
    4. If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset.

Resetting removes that app’s locally stored settings and sign-in data, but it does not delete purchases attached to the Microsoft account. Windows documents Repair first and Reset if repair does not work.^3^

Afterward, open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates and install all available Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services updates. Also open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.^4^

    4. Check whether the account itself works

Try the Microsoft account sign-in helper.^5^

    • If the account signs in successfully online but the grey Windows dialog still closes, the fault is local to Windows or its app components.
    • If online sign-in also fails, complete the account recovery or verification steps before continuing.

    5. Repair Windows without deleting apps or files

If the same dialog still fails in Store, Xbox, and Settings > Accounts > Your info > Sign in with a Microsoft account instead, use Windows 11’s repair reinstall:

    1. Connect the PC to power and the internet.
    2. Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
    3. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
    4. Select OK and allow the download and installation to complete.
    5. Restart when requested.

This reinstalls the current Windows version, repairs Windows system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings.^6^

Do not interrupt this process. If Fix problems using Windows Update is absent, it can be unavailable on managed PCs or Windows 11 installations missing the required updates; install current Windows updates first.^6^
