Copilot chat resets scroll position to beginning

When I open a long historical chat and continue the conversation, Copilot frequently jumps back to the start of the conversation instead of keeping me at the latest message. This occurs after reopening the chat or after sending a new message. For long conversations this makes the chat difficult to use because I must repeatedly scroll to the bottom.

Expected behavior: Remain at the newest message or restore the last viewed position.

Actual behavior: Conversation opens or refreshes near the beginning of the chat.

Impact: Severely affects usability of long-running project conversations.

Use Copilot in a web browser for long conversations; similar Windows desktop-app scrolling failures are publicly reported, while no official Microsoft Support notice currently confirms this exact “jump to the beginning” symptom as a known issue.^1^

    Workaround and isolation test

    1. Open Copilot in Microsoft Edge and sign in with the same account used by the Windows app.
    2. Open the affected conversation, scroll to the newest message, and send a test message.
    3. Switch away and reopen the conversation.
      • Browser retains the position: continue long chats there; the behavior is isolated to the Windows app.
      • Browser also jumps to the beginning: report it as an account/service or cross-client issue rather than repairing only the Windows app.

Other reports describe Copilot moving unexpectedly to the top and failing to retain scroll position after focus changes, so this is consistent with a reported UI/navigation defect.^2^^3^

If it occurs only in the Windows app

Reinstall the app to replace its local installation:

    1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
    2. Find Copilot, select … → Uninstall.
    3. Reinstall Copilot from Microsoft Store.
    4. Reopen the same chat and repeat the test.

Microsoft documents these uninstall and reinstall paths for Copilot on Windows.^4^

If reinstalling does not change the behavior, continue using the browser workaround rather than repeatedly resetting the app.

    Report the defect

    From Copilot:

    1. Select … in the upper-right corner.
    2. Select Send feedback → Report a problem.
    3. Include:
      • That the affected thread is a long historical conversation.
      • Whether the jump occurs when reopening it, sending a message, or both.
      • Whether the browser reproduces the issue.
      • Windows version and Copilot app version.
      • Approximate occurrence time and time zone.
      • A screen recording or screenshot with personal or confidential content removed.

    That is Microsoft’s documented Copilot problem-reporting procedure.^5^

Alternatively, press Windows key + F immediately after reproducing it. Feedback Hub captures a screenshot and lets you search for an existing report to upvote or submit a new one; use Get Help instead if direct support is required.^6^
