A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
On macOS 12.7.6, that message means the installed Office version is no longer supported on that device. Starting July 13, 2026, unsupported Office on older macOS devices can go into reduced functionality mode: files can still be opened and printed, but editing, saving, and creating new files may stop working.
For Word specifically, that means Word may still open documents, but it may no longer let documents be edited or saved.
What can be done:
- Check which product is installed in Word > About Word.
- If it shows Microsoft 365, it is the subscription version.
- If it shows Office 2021 or Office 2019, it is a one-time purchase version.
- If it is Microsoft 365, sign in to the Microsoft account page at https://account.microsoft.com/services and use Install to install Microsoft 365 on another supported Mac, PC, or supported mobile device.
- If the Mac cannot be upgraded further, use Microsoft 365 on the web at https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/free-office-online-for-the-web?msockid=2b39ce288cbb6df61ab8db348d016c55. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are available in a browser.
- If the installed product is Office 2019 for Mac, updating or reinstalling will not fix this. That version cannot be updated to the required version.
The renewal itself does not guarantee full desktop app use on an older Mac. The subscription can still be active, but the device and Office version must still be supported.
