If you are trying to register your device on your Microsoft account online, the method to add a device to your Microsoft account using a serial number is only available for Microsoft manufactured devices, like a Surface laptop... etc.

For all other devices, ensure you log into the device with your Microsoft account, then ensure the Location Services setting and the 'Find My Device' setting is enabled in the Settings app, your device will then be automatically be added to your Microsoft account, that will not happen immediately, but it will happen eventually.

An HP laptop cannot be manually added to a Microsoft account by serial number; Windows 11 adds non-Surface PCs automatically when Windows is signed in with a Microsoft account.^1^

Add it to your Microsoft account

    1. On the laptop, open Start → Settings → Accounts → Your info.
    2. Check whether an email address appears under your account:
      • If it does, Windows is already using a Microsoft account.
      • If it shows a local account, choose the option to sign in with a Microsoft account and complete sign-in.
    3. Allow up to 24 hours, then check the device list at the Microsoft account Devices page. Non-Surface Windows 11 devices are added through sign-in, not through the Register device serial-number form.^1^
    4. If it remains missing after 24 hours, contact Microsoft Accounts and Billing support. A similar case involving a PC whose serial number was rejected was escalated through Microsoft Support → Contact Support.^2^

If this is a company- or school-managed laptop, it cannot be registered to a personal Microsoft account.^1^

If you meant HP product or warranty registration

Register it with HP rather than Microsoft:

    1. Find the exact serial and product numbers using HP’s instructions; the model name printed on the laptop might not be sufficient.^3^
    2. Open HP’s product registration page and enter the requested details.^4^
    3. Since manual serial-number entry has failed, try HP Detect My Device.^5^
    4. If HP still cannot identify it, use HP’s official contact page. Have the serial number, product number, and purchase receipt available.^6^

HP registration and Microsoft-account listing are separate: HP handles the laptop’s product and warranty record, while Microsoft links the Windows device through account sign-in.
