Microphone can't be accessed. Privacy and security permissions for Google Meet are not allowing access to the microphone.

    Welcome Corey Loehr,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand Google Meet reports that your microphone cannot be accessed because of privacy and security permissions.

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following.

Does the microphone work normally in other applications, such as Voice Recorder or another calling application? Also, are you using Microsoft Edge or another browser for Google Meet?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

1, Close other applications that might be using the microphone.

    • Fully close applications such as Teams, Zoom, or other calling/recording applications.
    • Reopen the browser and test Google Meet again.

2, If you are using Microsoft Edge, test Google Meet in an InPrivate window.

    • Open an InPrivate window.
    • Sign in to Google Meet and test the microphone.
    • If it works there, check whether an extension or the regular Edge profile is affecting microphone access.

3, Check whether Edge is managed by a policy.

    • Enter edge://policy in the Edge address bar.
    • Check whether AudioCaptureAllowed or AudioCaptureAllowedUrls appears.
    • If the device is managed by an organization and one of these policies restricts microphone access, please contact the organization’s IT administrator.

4, Run the Windows recording audio troubleshooter.

    • Open Settings > System > Sound.
    • Under Advanced, find Troubleshoot common sound problems.
    • Run the troubleshooter for Input devices.

    Looking forward to your update.

On Windows 11, turn on microphone permissions first, then allow browser/site access:

    1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
    2. Turn on Microphone access.
    3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
    4. Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.

If Google Meet is being used in Microsoft Edge, also allow the site in Edge:

    1. In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings.
    2. Go to Privacy, search, and services > Site Permissions > All sites.
    3. Select the Google Meet site.
    4. Set Microphone to Allow. If it was blocked, change it from Block.
    5. Return to the Meet tab and refresh the page.
    6. When prompted, select Allow for microphone access.

If the microphone still is not available:

    1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Under Input, select the microphone.
    3. Use Start test, speak normally, then Stop test and Play to confirm Windows can hear the microphone.
    4. Adjust Input volume if needed.

If Windows does not detect the microphone at all:

    1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
    4. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
    5. Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
    6. Back in Device Manager, right-click Sound, video and game controllers and select Scan for hardware changes if needed, then Update driver.

Note: uninstalling audio drivers can temporarily disable sound input/output until Windows reinstalls them.
