Copilot Chat History Missing After September 2026 Refresh/Migration (Continue with Google vs Microsoft Sign-In)

I am requesting assistance recovering my Copilot chat history following the Copilot refresh/migration that occurred around September 22, 2026.

Prior to the update, I had numerous important Copilot conversations saved in my account. When I accessed Copilot, I was presented with a banner indicating that Copilot had been updated and that my chat history would take some time to sync to the new experience. I refreshed as instructed and expected the conversations to reappear once migration was complete.

It has now been more than two weeks, and my previous chats are still missing.

I have confirmed the following:

  • The chats do not appear in Copilot on the web, the Copilot app, or my Microsoft account data export.
  • The issue began immediately after the migration/update experience.

I was able to locate several direct conversation URLs in my browser history from before the migration, but when I attempt to open these URLs, they redirect rather than loading the original conversations.

During troubleshooting, I discovered something that may be relevant:

My Microsoft account uses a Gmail address. In my normal browser session, copilot.microsoft.com loads a page with a "Sign In" button that redirects me to the Microsoft login system (login.microsoftonline.com), which does not provide Google sign-in options.

However, when I opened one of the old conversation URLs in an Incognito window, copilot.microsoft.com loads a page that presented a different Copilot sign-in experience that included:

  • Sign in with Microsoft
  • Continue with Google
  • Continue with Apple

When I selected "Continue with Google" using the same Gmail address associated with my Microsoft account, Copilot briefly loaded a version of the interface that displayed the traditional chat sidebar before redirecting again to the current Copilot experience.

This has led me to think that my historical Copilot conversations may be associated with my Google-authenticated identity rather than the Microsoft-authenticated identity that the new experience is automatically using. But when I try to sign in with Google now, the Microsoft system seems to tie the 2 accounts together since even signing in with Google now ends up loading my Microsoft account in the UI.

Could you please provide guidance on how I can solve:

  1. Whether the migration of my Copilot conversations completed successfully.
  2. Whether the missing chats still exist on Microsoft's servers.
  3. Whether there are multiple identity records associated with my Gmail address.
  4. Whether my historical conversations can be restored or re-associated with my current account.
  5. Whether the chat IDs from the old URLs can be used to locate the missing conversations.

These conversations contained important information, and I would greatly appreciate any assistance in recovering them.

Thank you for your help.

    Hello Jordan Bliss,

Thank you for documenting the behavior so thoroughly. Since the missing conversations are absent from the Copilot website, the app, and the activity-history export, and the old conversation URLs only redirect, you have already gone beyond the usual account and synchronization checks.

Please note that eligible history from linked personal sign-in methods, such as a Google email and a personal Microsoft account, should be brought together through the Microsoft account in the updated Copilot experience.

Unfortunately, this user-to-user forum cannot inspect account-linking records, verify the server-side migration status, search for conversations using chat IDs, or restore history to an account. Those checks would require access to account-specific service information that is not available to community contributors.

At this stage, I recommend contacting Microsoft Support and describing the issue as a Copilot chat-history migration or account-linking problem. When contacting Support, provide:

    • The approximate date the migration occurred
    • The sign-in methods used before and after the update
    • Confirmation that the chats are missing from the web, app, and activity-history export
    • Screenshots of the redirect behavior
    • A few affected conversation URLs or chat IDs

For privacy, please send the conversation URLs only through the private Support channel rather than posting them publicly on the forum.

If the Support Assistant appears, you can enter: “I need a live support agent to review a possible migration or account-linking issue.”

I understand that these conversations contain important information. Although the forum cannot confirm whether they remain recoverable, the details you collected should help Support investigate the account-specific behavior without asking you to repeat the same basic troubleshooting. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Based on the supported guidance, the most likely cause is that the old chats are still tied to the sign-in method/account context used before the update, or the migration is still completing.

    Supported steps:

    1. Verify the exact sign-in method used before the update If the chats were originally used with Google sign-in, use the same sign-in option again. For a Gmail-based account, that means selecting Continue with Google rather than signing in through the Microsoft account flow. Microsoft states that the same personal email or sign-in option previously used should be used.
    2. Check whether the correct account is active Personal accounts and work or school accounts remain separate. Use the account switcher and confirm the correct personal account is selected.
    3. Try a private browsing session for each personal account If multiple personal accounts are involved, open a new private browsing session, go to Copilot, and sign in with the personal account to check. If the session redirects to the updated experience, that account has moved or is completing the move. If it remains on the older Copilot site, that account has not moved yet and can still be used there until it moves later.
    4. Restart and recheck across devices Close and reopen the Copilot app on each device, or refresh the web page. Microsoft states that data movement and sync across devices can take time.
    5. Use any in-app link to previous chats if shown If content is still being moved, the app may show a link to access existing chats temporarily.
    6. Report the problem from the Copilot app If the chats are still missing, use:
      • … in the upper-right corner
      • Send feedback
      • Report a problem
      Include:
      • when the problem started
      • device and operating system
      • a screenshot of the issue

What is supported about the account-linking question:

    • If Copilot was used with more than one linked personal account, such as a Google email and a personal Microsoft email, Copilot history, preferences, and eligible content are brought together into the updated app through the Microsoft account.
    • No action is required for that linking behavior.
    • Personal and work/school accounts remain separate.

What is not supported by the available guidance:

    • There is no supported confirmation method here for whether migration completed successfully on Microsoft’s servers.
    • There is no supported way here to check whether missing chats still exist on Microsoft’s servers.
    • There is no supported guidance here that old chat IDs from direct conversation URLs can be used to recover chats.
    • There is no supported self-service process here to restore or manually re-associate historical conversations.

One important limitation is also documented: some content may not carry forward because certain features were retired. However, normal chats, images, and most other eligible Copilot content are expected to move.
