Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Yes—often they can be recovered.
Try these checks in Outlook.com or Outlook on the web:
- Check whether the messages were moved, not deleted.
- Look in Other if Focused Inbox is enabled.
- Also check Deleted Items, Junk Email, and Archive.
- Restore from Deleted Items.
- Open Deleted Items.
- If the messages are there, select them and choose Restore or Move them back to Inbox.
- Recover messages that were removed from Deleted Items.
- In Deleted Items, select Recover items deleted from this folder or the Recover button at the top.
- Select the messages and choose Restore.
- Recovered messages usually return to their original folder; if that folder no longer exists, messages go to Inbox.
- Check the retention limits.
- Email in Deleted Items is automatically deleted after 30 days.
- Items removed from Deleted Items are recoverable for 30 days.
- Junk Email is also retained for 30 days before automatic deletion.
- Check whether Outlook is clearing Deleted Items when signing out.
- Go to Settings > Message handling.
- Under When signing out, make sure Empty my deleted items folder is unchecked.
- If the issue started suddenly yesterday, there was a past Outlook.com issue where deleted emails synced from a Connected Account returned to the Inbox, but that issue was marked fixed.
If the messages are not in Deleted Items, Junk Email, Archive, Other, or Recover items deleted from this folder, they were likely permanently removed.
