Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
For Outlook on Windows, the most common supported fixes are these:
- Close Outlook.
- Open Internet Options in Windows, then select the Advanced tab.
- Under Security, clear Do not save encrypted pages to disk.
- Select OK.
- Reopen Outlook and test the message again.
If that option is grayed out, it is being enforced by Group Policy and must be changed by an administrator.
If the message shows a red X with “The linked image cannot be displayed…”, another known cause is Outlook blocking HTTP images through the BlockHTTPimages registry value.
- Exit Outlook.
- Open Registry Editor (
regedit.exe). - Check one of these locations for
BlockHTTPimages:-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Common -
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\policies\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Common
-
- If
BlockHTTPimagesis set to1, delete that value. - Start Outlook again.
Important: Incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems. Back up the registry before making changes. If the value is under the Policies path, it is controlled by Group Policy and will be restored unless an administrator changes the policy.
If this started after Office updates in classic Outlook and affects inserted images in emails, newsletters, or signatures, there was a known issue after the May 12, 2026 updates. That issue is fixed in later builds. In that case:
- Open the email in classic Outlook.
- Select Move > Actions > Other Actions > View Source.
- Search for
cidin av:imagedatatag such assrc=cid:image001.png.... - If present, update Office to a fixed build.
