    Hello steven divine,

Could you confirm whether your device is a Surface 3 or Surface Laptop 3? You can check the model in the Surface app. The distinction matters because Surface Laptop 3 supports Windows 11, while Surface 3 does not meet its requirements.

Microsoft’s Surface Windows 11 compatibility list explains this difference.

    Please also share:

    • Your current Windows version.
    • Which upgrade you’re trying to install and the exact message saying you must upgrade the OS first.

These details will help us identify the appropriate upgrade path without suggesting steps that may not apply to your device.

For a Surface Laptop, first confirm whether the model supports Windows 11.

Supported Surface Laptop models for upgrade to Windows 11 include:

    • Surface Laptop 2
    • Surface Laptop 3
    • Surface Laptop 4
    • Surface Laptop Go

If the device is a Surface Laptop 3, it can be upgraded to Windows 11.

    Recommended upgrade path:

    1. Open the Surface app.
    2. Expand Help & support.
    3. Check update status.
    4. If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
    5. Restart the device after updates complete.

    Important notes:

    • Surface updates are released in stages, so the upgrade may not appear at the same time on every device.
    • If updates were not previously received, manual update options are available through Download drivers and firmware for Surface.
    • Firmware updates can’t be uninstalled or reverted to an earlier version.

If the exact Surface model is not known, check it in the Surface app first, then compare it with the supported-device list.
