A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Do not drag the files back to the original directory as a recovery method. The supported recovery path is to restore from OneDrive first.
Recommended steps:
- Let the current delete/move action finish if it is still in progress.
- The safest option after a large accidental delete or move is to let the action complete, then undo or restore the files.
- Check the OneDrive website first.
- Sign in to the OneDrive website.
- Use Search everything at the top to look for the missing files.
- Search by filename, description, tags, dates, or places.
- Check the OneDrive Recycle bin.
- On the left side of the OneDrive website, select Recycle bin.
- If the files are there, select them and choose Restore.
- If the files might have been in Personal Vault, use Show Personal Vault items in the recycle bin.
- Check local storage on the PC.
- Use File Explorer to search the computer for the files.
- Also check the Windows Recycle Bin.
- This is important because files saved outside OneDrive, or files not yet synced, may still exist locally.
- If many files changed at once and there is a Microsoft 365 subscription, use Restore your OneDrive.
- Open Restore your OneDrive.
- This can roll back changes to files and folders from the last 30 days.
- Warning: files or folders created after the restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
- If the files are found online but not downloaded correctly to the PC, avoid moving them manually until they are restored or fully available again.
- Manual moves do not restore failed cloud copies.
- If the files are not found in search or in the OneDrive Recycle bin, recovery is usually not possible through self-service.
- For personal OneDrive, deleted files can be restored within 30 days.
- After permanent deletion from the OneDrive recycle bin, they cannot be restored.
The red circle with a white cross indicates a sync problem, not a confirmed recovery path. The safest supported approach is: search OneDrive web, restore from Recycle bin if available, check local disk and Windows Recycle Bin, then use full OneDrive restore if eligible.
