Try these Mac-specific OneDrive recovery steps in order:
- Check whether OneDrive is actually running.
- Look for the OneDrive cloud icon in the top Menu bar.
- If it is not there, open Applications and find OneDrive.
- Reset the OneDrive app from the app bundle.
- In Applications, right-click OneDrive and select Show Package Contents.
- Open Contents > Resources.
- Double-click ResetOneDriveApp.command.
- If using the standalone app, run ResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command instead.
- Start OneDrive again and complete setup.
- Install the latest Mac version of OneDrive.
- If OneDrive still does not open, install the latest version for macOS.
- If the latest version is already installed, the installer will end automatically.
- If macOS was recently updated and OneDrive is stuck on Processing changes:
- On macOS Big Sur, this can happen after the OS upgrade because of a VolumeID change.
- No action is required; wait for the changes to complete.
- If the error says A different version of the OneDrive app is already connected to this account:
- This usually means both the standalone and App Store versions are installed.
- Remove the previous installation by running the reset script inside the app bundle:
- Right-click or CTRL-click the OneDrive app
- Select Show package contents
- Open Contents/resources/reset*.command
- Then install the preferred version again.
- If the error says OneDrive couldn't start on macOS 12.1 or later:
- Close and re-open OneDrive.
- Restart the Mac.
- If the message mentions a system component, restart the Mac and make sure macOS is updated to the latest version.
- If the message says the file system is unsupported, OneDrive requires APFS on macOS 12.1 or later.
- If the message says the OneDrive folder is locked or cannot be written, unlock the folder and make sure it is fully writable, then restart OneDrive.
- Check whether the account works online.
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Menu bar, open the menu, and select View online.
- If sign-in online also fails, check the Microsoft Office Online Services status in the Service Health portal.
If none of these steps resolves it:
- For personal accounts, use Contact Microsoft Support.
- For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s IT helpdesk or admin.
