A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
On Mac, the most likely recovery path is AutoRecover or Word’s Document Recovery pane.
- Reopen Word and check whether Document Recovery appears.
- If multiple versions are listed, open the one with the most recent date/time.
- Save it immediately before editing or closing it.
- Check the Word AutoRecover folder manually in Finder.
- In Finder, select Go > Go to Folder or press Shift + Command + G.
- Check this path:
/Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery - Also check this path, which can be used in some versions:
/Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery - Look for files such as AutoRecovery save of ... or a file related to ROBERT TODD LINCOLN.
- If found, copy it to the Desktop and open it in Word.
- Search the Mac for the file name.
- In Finder, search for ROBERT TODD LINCOLN.
- If needed, also search for Word files generally.
- If the document opens but most content is missing, try recovering text from the damaged file in Word.
- In Word, go to Word > Preferences.
- Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, select General.
- Turn on Confirm file format conversion at Open.
- Close the dialog.
- Go to File > Open.
- In the Open menu, select Recover Text.
- Open the document.
Important limits:
- If Word was closed normally and Don’t Save was selected, the AutoRecover file is deleted.
- If no AutoRecover copy exists and the missing content was never saved, recovery options are very limited.
For future protection, storing Word files in OneDrive or SharePoint with AutoSave is the safest option.
