Surface Pro X runs on an ARM 64 - I cannot get Windows Defender to load properly in Windows 10 and am not sure how to upgrade to Windows 11.

Surface Pro X is compatible with Windows 11, and some Surface Pro X devices already come with Windows 11 on ARM. If the device is still on Windows 10, the upgrade is delivered through Windows Update when the device is eligible.

    Use this path first:

    1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    2. Select Check for updates.
    3. If the Windows 11 upgrade is available for the device, follow the prompts to install it.

If the upgrade does not appear yet:

    1. Open the Surface app.
    2. Expand Help & support.
    3. Check update status.
    4. If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
    5. Restart the device after updates finish: Start > Power > Restart.

If the device has not previously received the latest Surface updates, Surface drivers and firmware can also be updated manually by following Download drivers and firmware for Surface.

    Important notes:

    • Surface updates are released in stages, so the Windows 11 upgrade may not appear at the same time on every device.
    • Firmware updates can’t be uninstalled or reverted to an earlier version.
    • Surface Pro X uses a Microsoft SQ1 or SQ2 ARM processor and runs Windows on ARM.
    • Surface Pro X with LTE may have shipped with Windows 10 Home on ARM and can upgrade to Windows 11 when available.

    Hi Rob Buttarazzi,

Since the Surface Pro X is designed to support Windows 11 on ARM, one thing worth checking is whether the device is fully updated with the latest Surface firmware and drivers before attempting the upgrade.

As I have checked and validated, the approach from AI answer has pointed us in the right direction, so you can follow to see if it works.

Regarding that Windows Defender is not loading properly on your Surface Pro X, it may be worth checking the Windows Security service before focusing on the Windows 11 upgrade. Please try these quick checks:

    1. Press Win + R, type services.msc and press Enter.
    2. Locate Security Center and Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service.
    3. Make sure they are running and set to start automatically.
    4. Restart the device and try opening Windows Security again.

You can also run the following command in an elevated Command Prompt to check for corrupted system files: sfc /scannow

After any issues are repaired and all updates are installed, check Windows Update again to see whether the Windows 11 upgrade is offered for your Surface Pro X.

If Windows 11 still is not being offered after all available updates are installed, please let us know if you receive any specific error messages in Windows Update. That information can help narrow down whether the issue is related to update eligibility or another update component.
