A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For a personal Microsoft account, access cannot be granted to a non-account holder for privacy and legal reasons, and support agents cannot reset the password or change account details.
The supported recovery paths are:
- Try the standard account recovery flow at Recover your account.
- If the account is locked, sign in at https://account.microsoft.com to request a security code. Any phone number that can receive text messages can be used for the code; it does not need to already be associated with the account.
- If the sign-in screen does not show Next and indicates the account was locked for suspicious activity or Terms of Use issues, use the aka.ms/ reinstatement link shown in that window and submit the form. After submission, a Microsoft Online Safety support agent reviews it and responds by email. Do not submit multiple requests, because that can slow the response.
- If recovery information is tied to the deceased person and the recovery form cannot be completed successfully, there is no alternate manual path to transfer access to that personal account.
If access to the account is not possible, Microsoft states:
- If the credentials are known, the account can be closed directly.
- If the credentials are not known, the account closes automatically after two years of inactivity.
- Outlook.com and OneDrive accounts are frozen after one year, and stored email and files are deleted shortly after.
