The most likely reason is that upgrading the Microsoft 365 subscription did not change which Copilot benefits are available on the account that is currently signed in.
Supported causes from Microsoft guidance:
- Only the subscription owner gets Copilot AI benefits in Microsoft 365 Family and Premium
If the account is using a shared Family or Premium subscription, Copilot in the desktop apps and other AI benefits are limited to the subscription owner. - The wrong account may be signed in
If the app or microsoft365.com is signed in with a different Microsoft account than the one that owns the subscription, Copilot can show license or entitlement problems. Check the profile in the upper-right corner and sign in with the subscription owner account. - Usage limits still apply after upgrading
Microsoft 365 subscribers get higher limits than free users, but Copilot features are still subject to AI credits / usage limits. Upgrading does not mean unlimited use. - Region or age eligibility can block AI features
AI features are available only for people who meet regional age requirements. If those requirements are not met, the AI features can be removed from the apps. - Some Copilot features depend on where and how the file is used
For example, Copilot in Excel requires AutoSave enabled and the file saved to OneDrive. Microsoft also notes that some license validation issues can happen when files are stored in third-party storage instead of OneDrive or SharePoint.
What to check next:
- Go to
https://account.microsoft.com/servicesand confirm the subscription is active and that the signed-in account is the subscription owner. - In the Microsoft 365 app or at
https://microsoft365.com, verify the same Microsoft account is signed in. - Sign out of the Microsoft 365 apps, close them fully, then sign back in with the subscription owner account.
- If the issue is with a file-based Copilot feature, move or save the file to OneDrive.
- If using Copilot on the web, make sure the browser allows third-party cookies. In Edge: Settings and More > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies and site data > set Block third-party cookies to Off.
- Check whether the issue is actually a usage-limit message. Microsoft 365 subscribers have limits, and Premium provides higher usage than free.
If the account is the subscription owner, the subscription is active, and the correct account is signed in but the upgraded visual capability still does not appear, the remaining supported explanation is that the feature is limited by current usage limits or account entitlement state.
