To recover a BitLocker key in Windows 10 Pro, use the recovery key that was saved when BitLocker was turned on. The supported recovery locations are:
- A USB device
- A printed copy
- Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS)
- For work or school devices, Intune Company Portal if the organization stored the key there
If the device is at the BitLocker recovery screen, enter the 48-digit recovery key. Hyphens are optional.
For work or school devices enrolled in Intune, the recovery key can be retrieved from Company Portal:
- Sign in to the Company Portal website.
- Go to Devices.
- Select the locked PC.
- Select Get recovery key.
- Select Show recovery key.
- Copy the 48-character key and enter it on the BitLocker recovery screen.
If BitLocker recovery keys are stored in Microsoft Entra ID, they can be accessed at https://myaccount.microsoft.com:
- Open the Devices tab.
- Select the owned Windows device.
- Select View BitLocker Keys.
If self-recovery is not available, helpdesk or IT administrators can retrieve recovery information if the organization backed it up.
If the recovery key cannot be found, the encrypted drive cannot be unlocked with an alternative bypass from the documented recovery process.
