I can't log into Microsoft Defender to respond to an email of theirs

I received an email this morning that Defender's coverage of one of my devices is turned off; log in to turn it on. It won't let me log in, trying email, user name or phone number. Obviously I can sign in here, but the email won't let me.

The email is most likely a scam. Microsoft doesn't send unsolicited email to customers telling them that Microsoft Defender's coverage of one of their devices is turned off. If Microsoft Defender is turned off, Windows itself will notify you.

Do not do anything the email wants you to do. Do not sign in anywhere or call any number. Do not give the sender any information about yourself. Simply delete the email.

    Hello Steve Westcott,

I understand your concern, especially when the email says that one of your devices is no longer protected.

For security, please do not continue using the link in the email yet. Instead, open the Microsoft Defender app directly on the affected device and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used for your Microsoft 365 subscription.

You can then check the Device protection section to identify which device needs attention, could you also confirm:

    • The device and operating system involved, such as Windows, Mac, Android, or iPhone
    • The exact sender’s email address or domain, without sharing your full email address or other personal information
    • Any error message shown when you try to sign in
    • Whether you can sign in directly to the Microsoft Defender app, rather than through the email link

With those details, it can help me determine whether this is an account mismatch, an app sign-in issue, or a suspicious email.

I hope to hear update from you soon.
