Word App on iPhone Freezes after 3 minutes - was actively typing and not typing as well

I am having issues with the Word app on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. It continues to freeze after about 3 minutes, often when I’m typing or scrolling. I have located the current Microsoft/Apple Os issue page and completed their recommendations (update Word app, update iPhone Os), but the issue still persists. The current Word that is downloaded is 2.114, but the recommendation suggests 2.19, which I do not have that option to update in my App Store. The issues also does not involve whether or not the document is downloaded nor is it because of WiFi issues.

I am unable to reach actual support for this issue; the AI continued to push me to this community page. Any help would be appreciated

Since updating Word and iOS already did not resolve it, the supported next steps are:

    1. Verify the device still meets the current minimum requirement for Office on iPhone:
      • iOS must be 17.0 or later.
      • The iPhone/iPad Office app minimum version listed is 2.93.
    2. Update again from the App Store path Microsoft documents:
      • Open App Store.
      • Tap the profile picture at the top.
      • Scroll to available updates and update the Microsoft 365 app if offered.
      • Reopen the app and sign in again if prompted.
    3. If the app is updated but editing still freezes, fully quit the app and sign out/sign back in:
      • Quit the app completely.
      • Open it again.
      • Go to the app’s Account settings, sign out, then sign in again.
    4. If the issue continues, reinstalling the app is a reasonable next step. This is also suggested in similar iPhone/iPad freeze cases.
    5. Send feedback from the app so the issue can be captured directly from the affected device.

The version number concern is likely a mismatch in how the version was read. The current Microsoft support article lists 2.93 as the minimum iPhone/iPad app version, not 2.19.

If the device cannot update to iOS 17 or later, the documented fallback is to use Microsoft 365 on the web or another supported device.

    Hi, Karissa

Since Word 2.114 is already later than 2.19, the version shown in the advisory is not an update you are missing. Similar freezing has also been documented on recent iOS Word builds, so this may be an app regression rather than a Wi-Fi or file-download problem.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

Create a completely blank document and use it for more than three minutes. If only existing documents freeze, make a copy and remove large images, comments, tracked changes, or embedded objects. You can also copy the text into a new .docx file, which helps when a document is damaged.

Temporarily switch to Apple’s standard keyboard under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Disable third-party keyboards, Predictive Text, and Dictation for one test. This checks whether the freeze is being triggered by text-input processing.

Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If storage is nearly full, clear several gigabytes and restart the iPhone before testing Word again.

As a temporary workaround, edit the document in Safari through Word for the web. For direct support, use the Contact Us option at the bottom of the Word support page, and include “iPhone 16 Pro Max, Word 2.114, freezes after approximately three minutes” in the case description.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
