My Surface laptop was stolen but I haven't been able to remotely lock it because the battery is dead.

    Hi Paul Macheledt,

Having a laptop stolen is understandably stressful, especially when the device is currently unreachable and you are trying to protect the information stored on it. It is also frustrating when the battery is dead and you cannot immediately confirm its location or lock status.

While the Surface is powered off, it cannot update its location or receive a remote lock command. Please keep the Surface associated with your Microsoft account and check the Find My Device page again if the device later powers on and connects to the Internet. If it appears on the map, select Lock, then Next. This will only be available if Find My Device was enabled before the theft and the Microsoft account on the Surface had administrator access.

In the meantime, I recommend taking these precautions:

    • Change your Microsoft account password to protect the account.
    • Review the Surface under Devices > Info and support and save its serial number.
    • Report the theft to local law enforcement and provide the serial number and any location information that becomes available.
    • Avoid attempting to recover the device personally if a location appears.

You can access the device page here: Manage your Microsoft account devices

For the official instructions, see: Find and lock a lost Windows device

Please do not remove the Surface from your Microsoft account while you still want to check whether it becomes reachable. I know this isn't the news you were hoping for, but I wanted to make sure you got the most accurate information about your situation.  Thank you so much for your understanding.

A stolen Surface can still be remotely locked from the Microsoft account devices page even if it cannot currently be located. The lock action is done from the same device page used for Find My Device.

    1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in.
    2. Select the Find My Device tab.
    3. Choose the stolen Surface.
    4. If the device appears on the map, select Lock > Next.

    Important conditions:

    • Find my device must have been turned on before the theft.
    • The account on the Surface must have been an Administrator account.
    • A device that is off or has a dead battery cannot report its current location until it powers on again.

For added security, reset the Microsoft account password after locking the device.

If sign-in to the Microsoft account is blocked, use the Sign-in helper. If more help is needed, use Contact Microsoft Support. Support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.
