I have a Microsoft Surface Laptop. Recently my laptop was damaged and I need to retrieve my files. In my attempt to do so, I'm being prompted to provide my 48 digit Bit Lock key. I do not have this key. I do have the KEY ID for my laptop.

Can you direct me to support to assist.

    Hi Mike Georgia,

Just to make sure I'm understanding correctly, when you mention having the "Key ID," are you referring to the BitLocker Recovery Key ID shown on the recovery screen or a different number such as the Surface serial number? For your privacy and security, please don't post the full Key ID, recovery key, serial number or other sensitive information publicly. Just let me know which type of ID you have.

If your Surface is asking for the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key, the Key ID alone won't unlock the drive. It simply identifies which recovery key is being requested.

Kindly also note that this is a public user-to-user support forum. I don't have access to your Microsoft account, recovery keys, device records or any internal Microsoft systems and neither moderators nor contributors can access or change anything on your behalf. I also want to set expectations that BitLocker recovery keys cannot be recreated, recovered or bypassed, even by Microsoft Support. Access to the encrypted drive generally requires the correct 48-digit recovery key.

If you haven't already, I recommend checking whether the recovery key was saved to the Microsoft account associated with the Surface: Microsoft BitLocker Recovery Keys.

If the device was provided by a company, school or other organization, the recovery key may be stored by their IT administrator instead.

If you're unable to locate the recovery key, you can contact Microsoft Support and provide the BitLocker Recovery Key ID, your Surface serial number and proof of ownership. While they won't be able to generate or retrieve the recovery key for you, they may be able to help identify where it may have been stored.

When you have a chance, please let me know which Key ID you have and whether the device was set up using a personal Microsoft account, a work or school account or a local account. That information may help narrow down the available recovery options.

    I hope this helps.
