For a Surface keyboard and touchpad, the recommended update path is Windows Update and the Surface app.
- Open the Surface app.
- Expand Help & support to check driver and firmware update status.
- If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
- After Windows updates finish, install all available optional updates:
- In the taskbar Search box, type View optional updates and open it.
- In Driver updates, install all available Surface-named drivers.
- Restart the Surface after updates complete.
If the touchpad still has problems after updating:
- Open Device Manager.
- Look for the touchpad under:
- Human Interface Devices, or
- Mice and other pointing devices
- Update the driver there, or reinstall the touchpad device through Device Manager.
For Surface devices, manual driver packages are also available as downloadable .msi files from the Microsoft Download Center for the specific Surface model. That option is intended for advanced troubleshooting, offline devices, deployment to multiple devices, or creating system images.
Before installing updates, connect the Surface to power, make sure the battery is at least 40%, and keep the device connected to a stable internet connection. If a Surface accessory is used, connect it during the update so it can receive updates too.
