Hello,

I am writing to inform you that I am currently experiencing a technical lockout from my school account due to an issue with the Microsoft Authenticator app.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the application, which reset my verification tokens. Now, when I attempt to sign in or recover my account, the system requests an Authenticator code or prompt that I cannot complete because I am already in the app.

Because of this, I am temporarily unable to access my school account and complete pending coursework.

Please help resolve this issue.

    Dear @LaShanda Artis-Washington

I recommend contacting your school’s IT help desk or Microsoft 365 administrator and requesting an MFA reset. Reinstalling Authenticator does not automatically reconnect it to your school account.

First, select Sign in another way on the verification screen. If you previously registered another method, use it to sign in.

If no usable alternative appears, send your school’s IT team this message: "I am locked out of my school account after reinstalling Microsoft Authenticator. I cannot complete the existing verification prompt. Please reset my MFA registration and, if needed, provide a Temporary Access Pass so I can register Authenticator again. This is preventing access to pending coursework". Your IT administrator can follow the instructions for managing user authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multi-factor authentication.

After IT restores access, open Security info, select Add sign-in method > Microsoft Authenticator, and follow the setup instructions. Add another verification method permitted by your school.

Microsoft’s guidance: Set up multifactor authentication for Microsoft 365.

I also suggest notifying your instructor promptly and requesting an alternative submission method or extension while IT resolves the lockout.

Your school’s IT help desk must reset your MFA registration by selecting Require re-register MFA, because reinstalling Authenticator does not restore work or school account credentials.

    Request the reset

Contact the school’s IT help desk by phone, its public support portal, or in person. Send this exact request:

I reinstalled Microsoft Authenticator and lost access to the registered verification method for my school account. I have no usable method to approve the sign-in. Please verify my identity and select Require re-register MFA for my account.

A password reset alone will not resolve the missing Authenticator registration. Work or school credentials are not included in Authenticator backups; only the account name may be restored, after which the account must be registered again.^1^

    Instructions for the school administrator

An administrator holding at least the Authentication Administrator role should:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
    2. Go to Entra ID → Users.
    3. Select your user account.
    4. Open Authentication methods.
    5. Select Require re-register MFA.^2^

This removes the existing Microsoft Authenticator, phone, and software OATH methods associated with the account. At your next sign-in, Microsoft Entra will require you to configure a new MFA method.

    Register Authenticator again

    After IT confirms the reset:

    1. Start a new sign-in to your school account in a browser.
    2. Follow the prompt to set up additional security information.
    3. In Authenticator, select Add account → Work or school account → Scan a QR code.
    4. Scan the QR code displayed in the browser.
    5. Complete the test notification or verification code.
    6. Sign out and perform a test sign-in before relying on the account for coursework.

If permitted by school policy, register a second authentication method to reduce the risk of another lockout.

    If another method appears

Before waiting for the reset, the Microsoft sign-in page may offer Sign in another way, Other verification options, or I can’t use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now. Use it only if it presents a method you previously registered, such as SMS, a phone call, security key, or another Authenticator device. If no usable option appears, the MFA registration cannot be bypassed from the app; the school administrator must reset it.^3^

Do not uninstall and reinstall Authenticator again. That does not clear the MFA registration stored by the school.

Because coursework is affected, include the deadline and lockout screenshot in the IT ticket and notify the instructor or course administrator while the identity reset is pending.
