    Hi Dan Thomas,

I understand that the difference between the number of installations and the number of devices you can actively use can be confusing.

With Microsoft 365 Family, you can install the Microsoft 365 apps on additional computers, but each person can be signed in on only five devices at the same time. Computers, tablets, and phones all count toward that five-device limit for the individual user.

If you are setting up a new computer and have already reached the limit, you do not need to uninstall Office from every device. Simply sign out of an older or unused device through your Microsoft account, then sign in on the new computer.

You can review your subscription sharing and devices at https://account.microsoft.com/services. If you need any additional information, please feel free to ask. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Read more in the article at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accounts-billing/subscriptions/sign-in-to-microsoft-365 .

In particular, read the section titled "How sign in works in Microsoft 365" (part of which is shown in the screen shot below).

A Microsoft 365 Family plan supports up to six people, and each person can install the desktop apps on all their computers and other devices but remain signed in on only five devices at the same time.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Manage Microsoft 365 subscription sharing | Microsoft Support")

    • The subscription owner can share with five other people.
    • Each of the six people uses their own Microsoft account.
    • Each person can have Office active on five devices simultaneously, in any combination of Windows PCs, Macs, tablets, and phones.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Office for home")
    • Across the family, that means up to 30 simultaneously signed-in devices.
    • Apps may be installed on additional computers. If someone exceeds five active devices, Microsoft 365 automatically signs that person out of an earlier device; they can sign back in when needed.

Adding another Family subscription to the same Microsoft account extends the subscription term—it does not increase the device or user limits.^3^
