How to Fix Authenticator Code Problem

I want to sign into my school account but can't because it wants me to verify with Microsoft Authenticator.

I added my account to the app (not my school). At first, I had no problem but later I ended up clearing the data of the app (big mistake) and even though my account still shows up in authenticator, I now get no notifications.

I have contacted my school and they were able to change my password but now I am signed out and have no way to sign in as I am still stuck on the verify this is you on authenticator and there is nothing they can do.

My only sign in options are to send a code or approve request BUT I GET NO CODE OR REQUEST.

I have tried EVERYTHING!!!! PLEASE HOW DO I BYPASS THIS!!!

    Hi @Valerie Smith

May I know whether your IT administrator has already tried resetting or revoking your MFA methods?

Since you're using a work or school account, the MFA settings are managed by your organization's IT department. For assistance with resetting or updating your MFA configuration, you will need to contact your IT administrator directly, as they have the necessary permissions to manage authentication methods for your account.

Specifically, please ask them to reset your MFA settings and allow you to re-register your MFA methods.

This is a standard administrative task, and your IT team should be able to assist with it. You may also refer them to the following Microsoft article for guidance: Manage user authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication

Once your IT administrator has reset your MFA settings, the next time you sign in, you should be prompted to register your MFA methods again from scratch, including setting up the Microsoft Authenticator app by scanning a new QR code.

Additionally, please ensure that your Microsoft Authenticator app is updated to the latest version, as using an outdated version may cause authentication-related issues.

If you need any further assistance, please feel free to let me know in the comments section.

Your school’s Microsoft Entra Authentication Administrator must reset your authentication methods and require MFA re-registration; changing your password does not restore Authenticator, and there is no user-side bypass for the MFA prompt.

Clearing the app’s data removed the credential used to approve requests. A work or school account may still appear in Authenticator because only its name is restored or retained; work or school credentials are not backed up and must be registered again.^1^

Send this request to your school IT help desk

My password was reset, but my Microsoft Authenticator credential was lost when the app data was cleared. I cannot receive approval requests or generate a usable verification code. Please have a Microsoft Entra Authentication Administrator select Require re-register MFA for my account and, if necessary, Revoke sessions. A password reset alone does not reset my authentication methods.

    The administrator should:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center with at least the Authentication Administrator role.
    2. Go to Entra ID → Users.
    3. Select your school account.
    4. Select Authentication methods.
    5. Select Require re-register MFA.
    6. If the old sign-in session continues to appear, select Revoke sessions.

Require re-register MFA removes the registered Authenticator app and other existing MFA methods, allowing new methods to be configured during the next sign-in. Revoke sessions invalidates current refresh tokens and forces fresh authentication.^2^

    After IT performs the reset:

    1. Start signing in to the school account again.
    2. Follow the prompt to set up security information.
    3. In Authenticator, choose Add account → Work or school account.
    4. Scan the QR code displayed during registration.
    5. Complete the test approval before closing the setup page.

Removing and re-adding the account in Authenticator before the school resets MFA will not solve the lockout, because registering it normally requires successful authentication.

If the school cannot perform normal re-registration

Ask whether its authentication policy supports issuing a Temporary Access Pass (TAP). This is a time-limited code created by an administrator that can let a user reach the Security info page and register a new authentication method without completing the unavailable Authenticator prompt.^3^

This option works only if the school has enabled TAP for your account. If it has, the administrator provides the pass; you then use it during sign-in and register Authenticator immediately.

If first-line school support says nothing can be done, ask them to escalate the ticket to the team that administers Microsoft 365/Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft community moderators cannot change a school-managed account, while the institution’s tenant administrator can reset its MFA registration.^4^
