A factory reset removes the account from that PC, not from Microsoft’s systems.
What happens on the device:
- Resetting a Windows PC reinstalls Windows.
- If Remove everything is chosen, personal files, apps, and settings are removed from the PC.
- Removing an account from a Windows device does not delete the Microsoft account itself; it removes the sign-in information and data from that device.
What this means for a personal Microsoft account:
- The personal Microsoft account is not deleted entirely.
- It is removed from that PC during the reset.
- After the reset, the account can still be used to sign in on other devices and Microsoft services.
Recommended steps before resetting:
- Back up important files first.
- If BitLocker is enabled, make sure the BitLocker recovery key is available.
- If the laptop is being returned, recycled, sold, or handed off, use Remove everything for a clean reset.
- After reset, the device can also be removed or unlinked from the Microsoft account at
https://account.microsoft.com/devices.
If a work or school account is also connected in Windows, disconnecting it only removes that account’s sign-in information and data from the device; it does not delete the account.
