I have a work laptop that needs to be set to factory settings. My Microsoft account remaining on this PC is my personal Microsoft Account.

If I do the factory reset, will I lose or my personal Microsoft account and settings be removed entirely OR just on this PC?

If you are resetting that device, if you choose to remove everything during the reset, that will basically remove everything from the PC including your account and all data on the device, it will be like a full clean installation of Windows.

    2

If you choose to keep your files and apps at the start of the reset, your files and account will not be removed from the PC, but you will need to reinstall all your apps.

    3

Resetting a PC, regardless of which setting you choose does not affect your Microsoft account online, you will not loose access to your Microsoft account or settings stored on your account online.

A factory reset removes the account from that PC, not from Microsoft’s systems.

    What happens on the device:

    • Resetting a Windows PC reinstalls Windows.
    • If Remove everything is chosen, personal files, apps, and settings are removed from the PC.
    • Removing an account from a Windows device does not delete the Microsoft account itself; it removes the sign-in information and data from that device.

What this means for a personal Microsoft account:

    • The personal Microsoft account is not deleted entirely.
    • It is removed from that PC during the reset.
    • After the reset, the account can still be used to sign in on other devices and Microsoft services.

    Recommended steps before resetting:

    1. Back up important files first.
    2. If BitLocker is enabled, make sure the BitLocker recovery key is available.
    3. If the laptop is being returned, recycled, sold, or handed off, use Remove everything for a clean reset.
    4. After reset, the device can also be removed or unlinked from the Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/devices.

If a work or school account is also connected in Windows, disconnecting it only removes that account’s sign-in information and data from the device; it does not delete the account.
