Factory Resetting a Microsoft Surface Pro 4

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 that I purchased in July 2020 and want to donate to a nonprofit organization. The problem is that I can no longer remember my PIN, and Windows Hello facial recognition no longer recognizes me. As a result, I can't access the device to reset it and remove my personal information before donating it. Is there a way to do a factory reset, or another way to access my computer?

Try the option described at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/backup-recovery/reset-your-pc

Reset your PC from Windows RE

    Note

If you’ve encrypted your device, you’ll need your BitLocker key to complete this task. If you don’t know your BitLocker key, see Find your BitLocker recovery key.

    Access the Windows Recovery Environment

Once in Windows RE, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > System Restore.

Choose from the options and/or settings in the reset options table.

Option 2: Create a USB Recovery Drive

If built-in recovery doesn’t work, create a USB recovery drive using another Windows PC.

Step 1: Download the Recovery Image

Go to Microsoft Surface Recovery Image.

Sign in, select your Surface model, enter the serial number, and download the ZIP file.

Step 2: Prepare the USB Drive

Use a USB drive with at least 16 GB (32 GB recommended).

    Format it to FAT32.

Back up any data because this process erases the drive.

Step 3: Create the Recovery Drive

    Extract the ZIP file.

Copy all extracted files to the root of the USB drive.

    Step 4: Boot from USB

Insert the USB into the Surface.

Hold Volume Down, press and release Power.

Release Volume Down when the logo appears.

    Choose language and keyboard layout.

Select Recover from a drive and follow the prompts.

Yes. Since sign-in is no longer available, the supported ways to reset a Surface Pro 4 are:

    1. Try password recovery first if access to the Microsoft account may still be possible. If sign-in cannot be restored, continue with reset.
    2. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
    3. After the device restarts to Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    4. Choose Remove everything.
    5. If prompted, choose to fully clean the drive. This is the recommended option when donating, recycling, or selling the device because it makes removed files harder for other people to recover.

If the normal reset path does not work, use a Surface USB recovery drive instead. Important: this reinstalls Windows, deletes all personal files, resets settings, and removes installed apps.

    USB recovery steps:

    1. Make sure the Surface is turned off and plugged in.
    2. Insert the USB recovery drive.
    3. Press and hold Volume Down, then press and release Power.
    4. When the Microsoft or Surface logo appears, release Volume Down.
    5. Select the language and keyboard layout.
    6. Select Recover from a drive or Troubleshoot > Recover from a drive.
    7. If prompted for a recovery key, select Skip this drive.
    8. Choose Just remove my files or Fully clean the drive.
    9. Select Recover.

    Notes:

    • A reset removes personal files, installed apps, and settings.
    • Before resetting, make sure product keys and installation files are available for any desktop apps that may need to be reinstalled later.
    • If the device returns to the Choose an option screen again after reset and Windows still does not start, the Surface needs service.
