For Microsoft accounts, Windows PCs are not added manually unless the device is a Microsoft Surface. Other Windows 10/11 PCs are added automatically when signed in with the Microsoft account.
Use this checklist:
- Confirm the current PC is signed into Windows with the correct Microsoft account.
- Wait up to 24 hours, because a registered device can take that long to appear in the device list.
- If the PC is company-managed or organization-owned, it can’t be registered to a personal Microsoft account.
- If trying to add it by serial number, that only works for Surface devices.
To remove the old device entry:
- Go to account.microsoft.com/devices.
- Find the old device.
- Select Remove device.
- Check the confirmation box, then select Remove.
If the old device still affects Microsoft Store downloads, unlink it as well:
- Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/devices/content
- Find the device and select Unlink.
- Review the device details and select Unlink again.
If the current PC still does not appear after waiting, this can be a server-side sync issue that has been reported in similar cases. In that case, use Contact Support from Microsoft support.
