Bitlocker missing...any ideas how to recovery it?

In my MIcrosoft account, I have a PC registered (Windows 10 OS) but it says that no bitlocker key has been backed up to my Entra ID.

The PC crashed during shutdown and is not starting now. I have tried all the necessary troubleshooting diagnostics to find this but I cannot find it. The hard drive is locked and I have tried to access this other ways but nothing. Any ideas?

    Hi glenn gibbs,

Since the drive is BitLocker-encrypted, access to the data depends on locating the correct recovery key. If the key is not available in the account currently being checked, it may be worth verifying whether the device was ever signed in with a different Microsoft account, work account, or school account that could have been used when encryption was enabled.

As an additional check, if the drive can still be detected by another PC, look for any clues such as the BitLocker Recovery Key ID shown on the recovery screen and compare it against any recovery keys stored in accounts you previously used. This can help identify whether the key was backed up elsewhere.

Unfortunately, BitLocker-protected data cannot be unlocked without a valid recovery key, and recovery tools such as repair-bde still require the recovery information to be available.

If you're comfortable sharing a bit more detail, could you confirm whether this was a personal device or one that was ever connected to a work or school organization? That may help narrow down where the recovery key was originally stored.

For a personal Windows 10 device, the first place to check is the Microsoft account recovery key page. On another device, sign in and look for a 48-digit key that matches the recovery key ID shown on the BitLocker screen:

    1. Note the first 8 digits of the recovery key ID from the BitLocker prompt.
    2. Open https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey.
    3. Sign in with the Microsoft account that was used on the PC.
    4. Match the key ID and use the related 48-digit recovery key to unlock the drive.

If the device was set up by someone else, or BitLocker was enabled by someone else, the key might be stored in that other person’s Microsoft account.

If no recovery key appears in the Microsoft account, check whether it was saved in one of the other supported locations when BitLocker was enabled:

    • a USB flash drive
    • a printed copy
    • a text file saved elsewhere
    • a work or school directory such as Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory, if this was an organizational device

Since this is tagged as a home/personal scenario, if the Microsoft account page says no key was backed up and no saved copy exists elsewhere, Microsoft Support cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.

If the drive cannot be unlocked with the recovery password, and the drive is severely damaged, repair-bde.exe can be used only to try to salvage encrypted data from a damaged BitLocker drive. This requires the recovery password or recovery key, and for some cases a key package. It is not a bypass for a missing recovery key.

If the recovery key cannot be found in any saved location, the encrypted data on the drive cannot be accessed. The remaining option is to erase or reset the device and reinstall Windows. Warning: formatting or resetting removes the data on the locked drive.
