Whenever I try to log in to my laptop using face recognition and PIN, it doesn't work because it says, "Something happened, and your PIN isn't available." Then, I am prompted to set up my PIN again and reset it. When it comes to the reset page, I would cancel and it would bring me back to my laptop and desktop screen like normal. But how do I fix this? My PIN thing isn't working. I removed Windows Face Recognition and tried to set it up again, and now it doesn't work + I changed my PIN, and it's still not working.

    Hello,

You may experience this issue if the contents of the NGC folder are damaged or corrupted. This folder stores keys associated with your Windows Hello PIN, so corruption within it can prevent the PIN from working correctly.

To resolve the issue, delete the contents of the NGC folder by running the commands below one at a time. Then, set up a new PIN and check whether the issue is resolved.

Open the Command Prompt (Administrator) window.

    Sfc /scannow

    takeown /f "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc" /r /d y

    icacls "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc" /grant Administrators:F /t

    rd /s /q "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc"

Once complete, go to Settings > Accounts > Windows Hello PIN and reset the PIN.

Restart your computer and sign in.

Use a working sign-in method first, then reset Windows Hello in this order:

    1. Sign in with your password if PIN fails.
    2. Reset the PIN:
      • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
      • Remove the PIN and add it again. This is the documented recovery path when PIN is not working.
      • If Windows asks to create the PIN again after already having one, that can happen after security updates or system changes.
      • If PIN creation fails, sign out, sign back in, and try creating the PIN again.
    3. Reconfigure Windows Hello Face:
      • In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Windows Hello Face, remove the current face setup if it is still listed.
      • Set it up again.
      • If face sign-in says “Couldn’t recognize you”, sign in with PIN or password and select Improve recognition.
    4. Check updates before testing again:
      • Open the Surface app and expand Help & support to check update status.
      • Select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install available updates.
      • This is recommended for Surface drivers and firmware, and Windows Hello issues can also be affected by Windows updates.
    5. If facial recognition is still failing after re-setup:
      • Make sure the camera is clean and unobstructed.
      • Check lighting conditions.
      • Re-scan if glasses, facial hair, hats, or accessories changed.
    6. If biometric sign-in is still unavailable or not working:
      • In Settings > Sign-in options, remove the nonworking Windows Hello enrollment and re-enroll it.
      • In Device Manager, check that the sensor appears under Biometric devices. If it does, uninstall that device and restart so Windows reinstalls the driver.
    7. If biometrics still do not work, restart the biometric service:
      • First remove the PIN in Sign-in options.
      • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
      • Run: net stop wbiosrvc && net start wbiosrvc
      • Risk: this changes the biometric service state and requires admin rights.

If the issue started after removing face recognition, the most relevant supported path is to remove and re-add the Windows Hello enrollment, then reinstall the biometric device driver if needed.
