My Windows Laptop named "DESKTOP-1" was formatted last week. I freshly installed Windows 11 and PC got a new name "DESKTOP-2"

My Child Logged was Admin on DESKTOP-1, so i formatted it.

on DESKTOP-2 , he logged-in as a standard user.

When as i parent i see the Family safety app, I see 2 linked devices.

It means both DESKTOP-1 and DESKTOP-2 are listed and i have no option to remove old DESKTOP-1.

In Child's account, only DESKTOP-2 is visible.

DESKTOP-1 was formatted almost 72 hours back, and i checked both web and family safety app. Issue persist all places.

How to remove the old PC from tracking?

Both time It was Windows 11.

Please help

    Hi PGarg,

Based on what you described, DESKTOP-1 appears to be an outdated Family Safety record left behind after Windows was reinstalled. Since only DESKTOP-2 appears when you check the child’s Microsoft account device list, there is no remaining device for you to remove manually from that page.

Please sign in with the child’s account at Microsoft account Devices once more and confirm that DESKTOP-1 is not listed. If it is already absent but still appears in both the Family Safety website and app, the remaining entry is likely on the Family Safety side rather than on the current Windows installation.

Unfortunately, Family Safety does not provide an organizer-facing remove option for this type of old device entry. In that situation, please contact Microsoft Support, select Get Help, and then Contact Support. Explain that the old PC no longer exists in the child’s Microsoft account device list but remains visible under the parent’s Family Safety view.

I would not recommend formatting the PC again, since DESKTOP-2 is already connected correctly and the issue appears to be limited to the old entry. Thank you so much for your understanding.

There is no supported way shown here to manually remove a stale Family Safety tracked PC from the child’s linked devices view.

    Supported steps to try are:

    1. Verify the child account on DESKTOP-2
      • On the child’s Windows account, go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Verify.
      • If Verify is not shown, open Microsoft Edge on the child account and complete verification at https://aka.ms/familyverify.
    2. Confirm the child is still a Standard user
      • On the PC, open Settings > Accounts and make sure the child account is not an Administrator.
      • This matters because administrator access can change or break Family Safety settings.
    3. Restart the device
      • Use Start > Power > Restart.
    4. Make sure Windows is fully updated
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Check for updates and install available updates.
    5. If limits or tracking look wrong, remove and re-add the limits
      • Family Safety guidance specifically recommends removing screen time limits and adding them back to clear glitches.
    6. If the old device still remains listed, contact support
      • Go to Contact Microsoft Support, enter the problem, select Get Help, and then Contact Support.

A related Microsoft account devices answer also states that linked devices are connected automatically and there is no way to force that process. That aligns with the stale device entry not having a user-side removal option in the material provided.
