After a reset, Windows often reactivates automatically if the device already has a valid digital license. First check the activation state:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11, or Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10.
- Review the message shown there.
If the device shows Windows is not activated, use the path that matches the situation:
- Previously activated device, no major hardware change
- Make sure the PC is connected to the internet.
- If available, run Troubleshoot from the Activation page.
- The Activation troubleshooter requires an internet connection, admin sign-in, and on Windows 10 it is available only if the copy is not activated.
- A significant hardware change happened, such as a motherboard replacement
- A digital license is associated with the device hardware.
- Open the Activation page and select Troubleshoot.
- If the troubleshooter cannot fix it, use the reactivate after a hardware change option if it appears.
- This works when the same Microsoft account was linked to the digital license before the hardware change.
- This is the first time Windows was installed on this PC, or no valid license is found
- Enter a valid 25-character product key from Activation > Change product key.
- If there is no product key, buy a digital license from Activation > Go to Microsoft Store.
- Need to confirm whether the license is linked to a Microsoft account
- On the Activation page, look for one of these states:
- Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account
- Windows is activated with a digital license
- Windows is not activated
- If the license is linked to the Microsoft account, reactivation after hardware change is supported through the troubleshooter.
- On the Activation page, look for one of these states:
If the troubleshooter does not resolve it, use the Windows activation error help page or contact customer support.
